A Bit About Grant Hermanns

Before I got into the world of journalism, I actually had dreams of making it into the film industry as an actor or director. But as I got older, I decided to give the writing field a chance as another way to get into the industry, and it has been the greatest experience of my life. I look forward to continuing my work and branching further out into potentially other fields, including possibly screenwriting.

Work Experience

The Union - Staff Writer, Arts Editor, Sports Editor, Opinions/Editorial Editor

January 2015 - December 2016

I was the arts editor of The Union newspaper, creating assignments for the various arts performances
around campus, as well as finding arts students/teachers on campus to profile. I was the editor for the sports desk of The Union newspaper, creating assignments for the sports games during the Spring 2015 season, as well as keeping an eye out for profiles of players or coaches. It was also my first experience working with Adobe In Design to create pages for print issues. I wrote for each desk of The Union newspaper, with a major focus on the arts and sports desks, volunteering as the beat reporter for the El Camino College baseball team.

Daily 49er - Staff Writer, General Assignment Editor, Opinions Editor

February - December 2018

For the spring semester at California State University, Long Beach, I became a staff writer for the college newspaper, Daily 49er, in which I would pick up, pitch and be assigned stories by editors and would not only concurrently edit stories with them through Google Docs, but would also take my own photos and send them to the newspaper’s photo editor to be touched up and prepared for online and/or print distribution. For the start of the fall semester at California State University, Long Beach, I became the General Assignment Editor for the college newspaper, Daily 49er, in which I would help write, copyedit and pitch stories to the section editors and staff writers. I was also able to take photographs and submit them with my stories and other writers’ stories as needed. Following the stepping down of the opinions editor, I was offered the position, running the section by coming up with stories for staff writers and other editors to pick up and write, while also listening to pitches and accepting or declining them, depending upon the preparation the writer had for the piece or for whether it would work for the paper. I would then edit the stories and send them up the chain to the managing editor and editor-in-chief to be approved before I published them. I would also still write stories for both my and other sections on the paper, help edit other stories as needed and take photos as needed.

Evolve Media, LLC - Academy Writer, Freelance Writer (ComingSoon.Net)

October 2017 - Present

I was recruited by Evolve Media to take part in a contributor’s program in which I would write at least four articles a week across their library of sites, including ComingSoon.net, Crave Online and Mandatory, and have them edited and published. The program lasted for about three months with an offer of promotion to a freelance writer for the website. Following my time in the program, I was hired as a freelance writer for the website, in which I would work with an editor in four-hour shifts five days a week and would be tasked with writing three to four stories a day for the website. The editor would assign me a story, or I would sometimes pitch news, and it would be my task to write it and insert the appropriate media, including photos, galleries, videos, etc., as well as adjust the SEO properly and write an excerpt for the website link. The piece would then be edited and published by whomever I was working with that day.
